To date, relatively few studies have focused on the gut microbiome and its relevance in female reproductive health. While there appears to be associations, few have alluded to cause-effect relationships.
It has been suggested that an altered gut microbiome may drive development of the following:
- Endometriosis Endometriosis and the Microbiome: a Systematic Review
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Gut Microbiota in Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: a Systematic Review
- Pregnancy Outcomes Recent Insights on the Maternal Microbiota: Impact on Pregnancy Outcomes
- Gynaecological Cancers The Microbiome and Gynaecological Cancer Development, Prevention and Therapy
Emerging research on the gut microbiome and male reproductive health is in its infancy.
While the gut microbiome is thought to be a key player, further understanding into the pathophysiological mechanisms underpinning reproductive health outcomes may lead to new therapeutics to prevent and manage reproductive disorders and disease.
