Gut dysbiosis during COVID-19 and probiotics

Some people infected with COVID-19 have reported gastrointestinal (GI) inflammation, with presentations ranging from cramps to complications with intestinal perforations. However, there’s a lack of research detailing successful treatment options for COVID-19 patients experiencing GI problems.

recent paper published in July 2021 investigated gut dysbiosis during COVID-19 infection, as well as the therapeutic effects of probiotics. At the time of the review, there were 19 clinical trials underway looking at probiotics and their role in COVID-19 patients. Once published, it’s hoped that these will help to identify whether there’s a preventative or therapeutic role of probiotics for COVID-19 patients.
