Gut-Organ Axis: An overview of the communication (‘cross talk’) between the gut and other organs.

It is well established that the gut can communicate with other organs in the body. This communication is bidirectional via different communication channels which include:

  1. The nervous system, including the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system (including the enteric nervous system)
  2. The circulatory system
  3. The mucosal immune system (including gut-associated lymphoid tissue; GALT) and lymphatic system.
