The Gut-Organ Axis

Gut-Organ Axis: An overview of the communication (‘cross talk’) between the gut and other organs.

It is well established that the gut can communicate with other organs in the body. This communication is bidirectional via different communication channels which include:

  1. The nervous system, including the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system (including the enteric nervous system)
  2. The circulatory system
  3. The mucosal immune system (including gut-associated lymphoid tissue; GALT) and lymphatic system.

The science behind how they communicate and the impact of that communication on our health is still unravelling.

Over the next year, we will run a series of blog articles exploring the science behind the different gut-organ axis and highlight the different levels of evidence that exist behind each one.
